Primary Blog/Balancing Business and Life: 5 Power Moves for Personal Stylists

If you’re anything like me, you know what it feels like to have your energy pulled in a hundred different directions. Right now, my husband is going through a major life transition—after selling his business and completing his contract, he’s trying to figure out what’s next for him. After 20 years of working for himself, this shift is unsettling for him, and as his partner, I naturally want to support him in finding his way forward. On top of that, my son has hidden disabilities that require extra time, patience, and focus.

I love my family deeply, and being there for them is a priority. But I’ve also noticed something: when I get caught up in only being the strong, supportive one, I start to disappear from my own life. I shrink in my business. I hold back from taking bold action. And I tell myself, “I’ll focus on that when things settle down.”

But here’s what I’ve learned—things rarely settle down completely, and if I keep waiting, I’m the one who gets left behind.

Maybe you can relate? Maybe you’ve found yourself delaying your next big move in business because your partner is struggling, your aging parents need help, or your kids require extra care. It’s easy to believe that we have to put our dreams on hold until life gives us permission to move forward. But that’s not the truth. The truth is, we have to give ourselves permission.

The Cost of Staying Small in Your Business

Many personal stylists unconsciously put their businesses on the back burner because they feel responsible for keeping everything else together. It might look like:

  • Delaying launching your new styling package because your partner is dealing with his own struggles.
  • Holding back from marketing yourself because you’re mentally drained from caregiving.
  • Shrinking in your business because you feel guilty putting yourself first when your family needs you.

But here’s the cost of waiting:

  • Your confidence erodes because you’re not showing up fully.
  • Your income potential shrinks, keeping you financially dependent or stuck.
  • You start to lose sight of why you started your styling business in the first place.
  • You feel resentment toward the people who seem to be holding you back—even though they’re not asking you to shrink.

You don’t need to wait until everything is perfect to step forward. The time to lead is now.

5 Steps to Step Into Your Power as a Stylist

1. Recognize That Your Business Deserves to Exist Alongside Life’s Challenges

There will always be reasons to wait. But what if your business wasn’t something you had to fit in after everyone else’s needs—but instead, something that stands alongside them?

📝 Journal prompt: “If I gave myself full permission to grow my business, even with life’s challenges, what would that look like?”

2. Let Go of the Guilt Around Putting Yourself First

Many personal stylists, especially those with caregiving responsibilities, feel guilty for prioritizing themselves. But your success doesn’t take away from your family—it adds to it. When you thrive, you bring in more financial stability, confidence, and fulfillment, which benefits everyone around you.

🔹 Reframe the guilt: Instead of saying, “I’m taking time away from my family to work on my business,” try “I’m building a future that gives my family more opportunities.”

3. Don’t Wait for Stability—Create It Within Yourself

If you’re waiting for things to settle down before you go all in on your business, you might be waiting forever. Instead, ask yourself:

🚀 “What is one thing I can do today to move forward, even in the middle of the mess?”

  • Can you send one email to a potential client?
  • Can you post once on social media?
  • Can you take 15 minutes to plan your next service offering?

Progress doesn’t have to be all or nothing—it just has to be consistent.

4. Stop Trying to Control Everyone Else’s Chaos

When my husband shares his frustrations about not knowing what’s next, my instinct is to go into ‘fix-it’ mode—to give him solutions, ideas, and reassurance. But the truth is, this is his journey to navigate. I can support him without making it my full-time responsibility. The same goes for my son’s needs—I can be present for him while also being present for myself. This shift in perspective has helped me focus on my business without guilt, knowing that I am still showing up for my family in the ways that matter most.

💡 But here’s the truth: Your role is to support, not to sacrifice your entire identity.

Instead of waiting for the external world to be calm, practice saying:
👉 “This chaos is not mine to fix. I get to live my life, too.”

5. Claim Your Space—Without Apology

One of the most radical things you can do is take up space in your business, even when life is imperfect.

  • Show up online, even if you’re tired.
  • Book that client, even if things feel messy.
  • Charge your worth, even if you feel guilty about making money when others around you are struggling.

Your success doesn’t come at the expense of your family—it sets the foundation for a better future.

You Deserve to Shine, No Matter What’s Happening Around You

Life will always be unpredictable. But your business doesn’t have to suffer because of it. You deserve to thrive, to lead, and to step into your full potential as a personal stylist—without waiting for permission or the perfect moment.

What’s one step you can take today to stop shrinking and start owning your power?
