I’ve been experimenting with a new way to do seasonal colour analysis using floral digital drapes. In this blog, I'll share the story of how I tested four different drapes—each representing a distinct season—to determine which one harmonised best with my natural colouring. You’ll learn why the right drape can make your skin glow and your eyes pop, while the wrong one can leave you looking dull and washed out.

1.

Drape #1: Why It Doesn't Work for Me

The first drape represents Spring, showcasing bright, vibrant floral prints in warm, sunny colours. While these colours are known for their cheerful and fresh appearance, they don’t harmonise well with my natural colouring.

Here’s why:
Floating Head Effect: You may have noticed that my head looked somewhat separate from the print. This happens because the bright tones of Spring don’t connect with my natural colouring, making it appear as if the colours and I belong in two different worlds.

Warm vs. Cool Undertones: My natural undertone is cool, whereas Spring’s colours are warm. This difference results in the warm hues of the drape overpowering my features, drawing attention to the print first and to me second.

Lack of Harmony: The bright, bold colours of Spring demand attention, which makes my softer, cooler features fade into the background. Instead of enhancing my natural beauty, these colours make me appear less vibrant.

While Spring colours can be stunning on the right person, they simply don’t align with my cooler undertones and softer, more muted features.

2.

Drape #2: Why It Doesn't Work for Me

The second drape, represents Winter, featuring a bold, high-contrast floral print. Winter colours are known for their drama and impact, but they didn’t complement my features.

Here’s why this drape didn’t work:
High Contrast: The bold, high-contrast colours of Winter were too stark against my soft, muted features. My skin, hair, and eyes lack the strong contrast needed to wear these colours well.

Print Dominance: With Winter's deep and dramatic hues, the print steals attention before my features do. This imbalance makes it hard to appreciate my natural colouring, as it’s overshadowed by the boldness of the print.

Coolness without Softness: While the drape’s colours are technically cool, they lack the softer tones that suit my Summer palette. As a result, the drape overwhelms rather than complements me.

Winter colours are perfect for those with high-contrast features, but for me, they are too much. Instead of creating harmony, they create a disconnect, making the print the focal point instead of my natural features.

3.

Drape #3: Why It's the Perfect Match for Me

Now, let’s dive into why drape #3 works so beautifully. It represents the Summer palette, which is a natural fit for my colouring.

Here’s what makes this drape the perfect match:
Soft, Watercolour Effect: The colours in this drape have a soft, watercolour-like quality that mirrors my natural colouring. The soft pinks, blues, and greys reflect the cool, muted tones of my skin, eyes, and lips, creating a seamless extension of what you naturally see in me.

Echoing My Features: The cool pink of my lips and the pink undertones of my skin are perfectly mirrored in the pink petals of the print. The light grey-blue in my eyes is echoed in the greyish-blue blooms, making my eyes appear brighter and more defined.

Harmonious Blending: Unlike the other drapes, this one doesn’t compete with my features. Instead, it enhances them, creating a sense of unity between the colours and me. The overall effect is soft, cohesive, and truly harmonious.

The beauty of the Summer palette lies in its ability to enhance natural beauty through subtlety and softness. The cool, muted tones make my features stand out in a gentle, flattering way, which is why drape #3 was the clear favourite!

4.

Drape #4: Why It Doesn't Work for Me

The final drape represented Autumn, featuring warm, earthy tones. While Autumn colours have a beautiful richness, they are not a match for my Summer colouring.

Here’s why:
Heaviness of Colour: The warm, earthy tones of Autumn feel heavy on me. The colours in this drape contain strong orange undertones, which clash with my cool, blue-based colouring.

Aging Effect: The warmth of these colours not only fails to enhance my features but also adds an unintended aging effect. The golden tones in the print emphasise shadows and lines, creating a dulling effect rather than a brightening one.

Disconnect with My Undertone: The most significant issue with this drape is the disconnect it creates with my cool undertone. The warm, golden hues of Autumn are the opposite of the cool, blue-based colours that suit me, making this drape feel off-balance and heavy.

Autumn colours can look beautiful on those with warm undertones, but they simply don’t work for someone like me with cool colouring.
