Lately, I’ve been ruminating on aging.
I see it in subtle ways: around my jawline, my neck, my increasingly grey regrowth!
There's been a definite change and sometimes, I do feel invisible.
I used to feel eyes on me and enjoy the reassurance of being noticed.
Now, not so much!
I’ve lost 6kg since February.
I walk daily.
I do strength training three times a week.
And yet, there are moments I look in the mirror and think, "Where did she go?"
As a personal stylist, this question feels especially loaded. Our industry puts so much focus on how we look, how we present ourselves, how visible we are. And when aging starts to change the reflection in the mirror, it can feel like our value is quietly slipping away. But I’ve come to see that this is a story we tell ourselves, not the truth.
But what I've lost in fleeting admiring glances is now replaced with something more real and lasting.
The people who notice me have lived more, have seen more, have suffered more. That feels far more meaningful.
And I’ve grown in confidence as I’ve aged. I know myself better. I trust myself more deeply. These are gifts that far outweigh the occasional wolf whistle from an attractive guy. That fleeting validation has nothing on the grounded sense of knowing and self-worth I carry now.
This evolution has also meant shedding myths we’ve been taught about aging, especially around how we dress, how we express ourselves, and how we exist in the world. As stylists, we must navigate these myths not only for ourselves but for the clients who look to us for guidance and inspiration.
If you’re feeling stuck in your visibility because of how aging has affected your self-image, this piece is for you.
So, let’s break some of these myths wide open.
Learn how to grow your styling business the right way using the latest marketing and sales information to secure more paid bookings.
Graceful aging is not about disappearing. It’s about finding new purpose.
Being 50, 60 and beyond, it’s not an end. It can be a beginning.
Many of my clients, brilliant, stylish women only stepped into their new careers as personal stylists in midlife and later.
This is a season rich with wisdom and self-awareness, and it’s the perfect time to explore new hobbies, passions, or even an entirely new career. Aging can be a reinvention.
Style tip: Dress for the life you’re stepping into, not the one you’ve left behind. Invest in pieces that align with your aspirations - structured blazers for new ventures, vibrant accessories that signal vitality, or statement shoes that say "I’m here and I matter."
Oh, the hair debate. I’ve felt the pull to go grey for years, but it surprised me how deeply conditioned I was to equate greying with giving up.
Even more surprising? The reactions from others. Some friends recoiled, worried I’d be “aging myself.”
But isn’t that the point? I am aging, and I’m doing it intentionally, consciously.
Grey hair isn’t surrender, it can be the start of a new exciting chapter. It’s saying, "I trust myself. I don’t need to paint over the truth."
And just because you make a decision doesn’t mean you can never change it. Initially, I committed to going 100% grey. But when I saw how it grew out, I realized I had two fully grey patches at my temples while the rest of my hair was about 70% grey.
So I adjusted.
Now I use clever grey blending at the front—it looks stylish, polished, and reduces the time, effort, and cost of frequent colouring.
Most importantly, I feel amazing in my skin and my hair.
Style tip: If you're embracing your natural grey, elevate it with a fresh cut or sleek styling. Think metallic tones in clothing to harmonize with your hair, or a bold lip to add vibrancy. The key is to look intentional, not accidental.
Truthbomb: soft pastels and tonals can be beautiful but they can also be draining. Without careful styling, they wash us out. I always say, wear what lights you up. But if you love your pastels (Hello Summers!), balance them with structure, contrast, or a pop of bold.
Keep the silhouettes modern, the accessories intentional. Style isn’t about retreating, it’s about editing, evolving, and feeling confident in your expression.
Style tip: Add edge to softer palettes with bold earrings, a great haircut, or a standout handbag. Look for clean lines and tailored cuts to keep the look modern and energized. Avoid overly vintage shapes that can age you unintentionally.
Bodies change. Mine has, and I know yours has too. Hips widen, skin softens, gravity has its say. But none of this means we have to hide in oversized, shapeless clothes. You can absolutely feel comfortable and look fabulous.
It may just mean reassessing your body shape now - not clinging to what it once was, but celebrating what it is.
Your body has carried you. It deserves clothes that honor it, not conceal it.
Style tip: Choose fabrics that move with you and cuts that define your waist, shoulders, or neckline - whatever part of your body you love most.
Don’t shy away from tailoring. A good tailor can be your best friend in honoring your current shape with elegance.
We don’t age out of beauty.
We don’t outgrow purpose.
We don’t become irrelevant.
The most magnetic women I know are in their 50s, 60s, and 70s.
They’ve stepped off the hamster wheel of proving and pleasing.
They know who they are. And that knowing, that’s where the real confidence lives.
If you're a personal stylist struggling with visibility because of how aging has affected your self-image, I want to say this: your value is not tied to your reflection. Your wisdom, your presence, your ability to guide others in style, these are irreplaceable.
If you’re feeling stuck, let’s talk. I offer a Stylist’s Unstuck Strategy Session to help you reconnect with your confidence, clarify your message, and reclaim your visibility in a way that feels authentic and energizing.
So let’s wear what makes us feel alive.
Let’s speak with the authority we’ve earned.
Let’s walk into every room knowing we are far from invisible and let's inspire other women be visible too ❣️
