“The Return to Who I Am” - How I Found My Way Back to My True Self

Have you ever looked at your life, the career, the success, the boxes you’ve ticked, and thought: “I’ve done everything right… so why do I still feel lost?”

I know that feeling intimately.
For years, I lived as the “good girl,” doing what was expected of me, keeping everyone happy, and dimming my light to stay safe. It took me decades, and more than one dark night of the soul, to return to who I truly am.

This is the story of that return.
And it’s also the foundation of the work I now do, helping women, especially stylists and creatives, feel safe to be seen, lead, and shine as their truest selves.

Growing Up the “Good Girl”

I grew up in rural Ireland, in a traditional Catholic family where goodness was defined by obedience. From an early age, I learned that love was conditional. That being accepted meant being agreeable, polite, and self-sacrificing.

  • To speak too boldly was “unladylike.”
  • To want too much was “selfish.”
  • To stand out was to risk being shamed.

So I learned to dim, to make others comfortable at the expense of my own truth.
And for a while, that worked.

By my twenties, I had a solid career in manufacturing, respectable, stable, “sensible.”
On paper, I was doing everything right.
But inside, I felt like I was slowly fading.

The First Breakthrough: Following the “Unacceptable” Desire

My first real act of rebellion, or as I now understand it, my first act of alignment, came when I decided to become a personal stylist.

When I told my family, it was as if I had announced I was running away to join the circus.

       “You’re leaving a good job… for fashion??”

It made no sense to anyone but me.
But the pull was undeniable, a whisper of the real me, asking to be seen.

Transitioning from a factory floor to the glossy boutiques of Orchard Road in Singapore was terrifying… and thrilling.
For the first time, I felt alive.
I felt me.

And for a while, that was enough.

The Second Awakening: When Success Lost Its Spark

But even success can become another mask.

After a few years, the styling work that once lit me up started to feel repetitive.
The excitement faded, replaced by a quiet ache, the sense that there must be more.

When I began mentoring and training other stylists, everything reignited.
Helping others step into their potential felt right.
Purposeful. Joyful.

For a while, I rode that wave, speaking, teaching, traveling.
Life flowed.
Until 2017.

The Breaking Point: Loss and the Dark Night

In 2017, everything changed.

I lost my younger brother suddenly, and with him, my sense of purpose.
The world turned grey.
Nothing seemed to matter anymore.

I kept trying to “bounce back,” to stay productive, to keep helping others, but the truth was, I was broken.

It took me years to stop searching for my “old self” and realize she was never coming back. Something new was asking to be born, but it would only emerge through surrender.

The Deep Work: Nervous System, Spirituality, and Flow

In my healing, I became obsessed with understanding why some seasons of business and life felt so effortless, while others felt like swimming through mud.

I noticed a pattern:
When I was grounded, regulated, and connected to my truth, everything flowed.
When I was forcing, pushing, or proving… everything constricted.

That observation led me deep into the study of trauma, embodiment, and energy.
I immersed myself in the work of Dr. Gabor Maté, Eckhart Tolle, and Margaret Lynch Raniere.
Their teachings helped me see what I had lived all along:

Our nervous systems hold the memories of every time it wasn’t safe to shine.

And unless we rewire those memories, not just mentally, but somatically, visibility will always feel unsafe.

That insight changed everything.

The Epiphany: Purpose Isn’t Something You Find

For years, I’d been chasing “purpose” as if it were a destination.
A job title. A business model. A brand.

Now, I know this:

     Purpose isn’t something you find.
It’s something you become, when you feel safe enough to be fully seen.

Every chapter of my story, from the Irish conditioning to the leap into styling, the grief, the spiritual awakening, was preparing me for this realization.

And it’s the foundation of my work today:
The Venus Image Code™ Core Invisibility Wound Program.

It’s the culmination of 25 years of styling, coaching, and soul work, designed to help women reclaim the safety to express who they really are.

What It Means to Feel Safe to Shine

When women feel safe in their bodies to be visible, everything shifts:

We stop performing and start radiating.
We stop hiding and start leading.
We stop chasing purpose and start embodying it.

Because true visibility isn’t about strategy, it’s about nervous system safety.
It’s about reconnecting to the essence of who you are, beneath all the layers of conditioning.

The Three Phases of Returning to Yourself

If you’re reading this and feel like you’ve lost touch with who you are, know that it’s not gone. It’s just buried under survival patterns that once kept you safe.

Here’s the roadmap I guide my clients through:

Phase Transformation Table

PhaseFocusShift
1. UnlearningNotice where you're still people-pleasing or performing for safety.From self-sacrifice self-honoring
2. RegulationRebuild safety through somatic tools (breathwork, grounding, energy alignment). From anxiety nervous system calm
3. ReconnectionReclaim visibility and purpose from your authentic frequency. From hiding radiating

Each phase builds upon the last, gently, sustainably, in alignment with your unique energy blueprint.

FAQs: The Return to Self & Visibility Work

Q1: How do I know if I have a “visibility wound”?
You might notice it if you…

  • Diminish your voice or ideas around others.
  • Feel anxious being seen online.
  • Keep waiting to feel “ready” before you show up.
  • Sabotage your momentum when things start going well.

Q2: Can nervous system work really change my business results?

Absolutely. When your body feels safe, your energy becomes magnetic.
Your message lands differently. Your offers flow.
It’s not about “mindset”, it’s about embodiment.

Q3: How long does this healing take?

It’s not linear, and that’s okay. Healing is cyclical, like nature.
Each time you meet a new edge, you build deeper safety and capacity to hold visibility.

Q4: What’s the link between styling and this deeper work?

Style is the outer expression of inner safety.
When you feel safe to be seen, your wardrobe naturally evolves, from armor to expression.

Q5: Can I do this work while growing my business?

Yes, in fact, it’s essential.
When your nervous system is regulated, you’ll attract opportunities, clients, and income with more ease and joy.

Q6: How can I learn more about which invisibility wound I'm carrying?

I have created free training on discovering your own invisibility wound and how to heal beyond it. Access the free training and accompanying worksheet here.

Final Reflection: Coming Home to Yourself

I used to believe success came from doing all the right things.
Now I know, success flows when you finally feel safe to be yourself.

If my story resonates, know this: you’re not behind, broken, or lost.
You’re simply being called back to yourself.

Your business, your purpose, your relationships, they all begin to shift when you stop trying to become and start allowing yourself to be.

And that’s the journey I invite every woman to take with me, back to the safety, visibility, and radiance that have always been yours.

Ready to Begin?

If my story resonates with you,  if you’ve ever felt the tug between wanting to shine and fearing what visibility might cost, I’d love to guide you deeper.

I recently recorded a free training called “Your Purpose Isn’t What You Do -  It’s Who You Are When You Feel Safe to Be Seen.”

In it, I share the exact process that helped me move from performing for approval to leading from authenticity. You’ll also receive a companion worksheet to help you uncover where your own visibility wounds may be holding you back.
