Primary Blog/The Secret to Turning Small Opportunities Into Big Wins—And How You Can Do It Too!

The path to success is rarely a straight line. In fact, it often takes unexpected twists and turns that, at first glance, might seem like disappointments or even detours. But what I’ve learned over the years is that every opportunity, no matter how small or unglamorous it might seem at the time, has the potential to lead to bigger and better things—if you’re willing to seize the moment and make the most of it.

This lesson hit me hard when I was chatting with my son on the way to school this morning. Somehow, the conversation turned to how I ended up working in an infant formula manufacturing plant at the edge of Singapore more than three decades ago. The story of how I got there has shaped my entire career and life, and it all started with what seemed like a less-than-ideal work placement back in university.

Let’s rewind to my third year in college. As part of our course, we were required to do a work placement with a company. While many of my friends landed glamorous positions at pharmaceutical companies, I was placed at a dairy co-op in Co. Tipperary, Ireland, doing microbiology testing on dairy products. I’ll admit, I wasn’t thrilled. In fact, I was pretty disappointed. At the time, it seemed like my placement was far less exciting compared to what my peers were doing.

But after my initial disappointment, I decided to make the best of it. I soon found that I actually enjoyed my work. The experience allowed me to meet wonderful people, and my boss was an absolute gem—a super cool mentor who made the experience even better. As I finished my placement, I had no idea that this seemingly small opportunity would open doors to an incredible job in Singapore many years later.

Fast forward several years. After a stint working in the dairy industry in the Middle East, I found myself in Singapore, where my then-boyfriend (now my husband) and I had relocated. Singapore was buzzing with opportunities, and I was ready to take my career to the next level. So, I applied for a job at a brand-new infant formula manufacturing facility.

I was excited to be called for an interview. But what really blew me away was when I walked into the room and discovered that one of the people interviewing me was a quality manager I had worked with during my time at Tipperary Co-op! This was someone who knew my work ethic and my background—someone who had seen me make the most of my placement years before. That connection made all the difference.

Thanks to my time at the dairy co-op and the relationship I had built with the quality manager, I landed the job. It was a brilliant role in a new startup, and it paid well too. It was a pivotal moment in my career, and none of it would have happened if I hadn’t made the most of that initial placement in Tipperary.

What’s the takeaway here? Simply this: Opportunities may not always seem appealing when you first encounter them. You might feel disappointed, or even like you’ve been dealt a bad hand. But if you’re willing to embrace those opportunities, do your best, and make the most of them, they can lead to incredible outcomes.

The same holds true in your styling business. Right now, I’m offering personal stylists an incredible opportunity to get more visible, attract more clients, and take their business to the next level. You might look at it and think, "I don’t know if this is for me" or "What if it doesn’t work out?" But here’s the thing: Every great opportunity comes with a bit of fear, a bit of uncertainty. That’s completely normal.

The question is, are you going to let that fear hold you back? Or are you going to be brave, seize the day, and make the most of the opportunity in front of you?

I want to ask you something: What’s stopping you from seizing the opportunities that could transform your business?

Is it fear? Fear of failure, fear of not being good enough, or fear of stepping out of your comfort zone? If that’s the case, I encourage you to examine those fear-based thoughts. We all experience them from time to time, but the key to success is not letting those thoughts control you. Think back to the story I shared about my own experience. If I had let my disappointment or fear of failure stop me from giving my best at the Tipperary Co-op, I never would have landed the dream job in Singapore.

Or is it lack of vision? Sometimes, it’s hard to see the bigger picture. We get caught up in the day-to-day challenges and lose sight of the long-term possibilities. But trust me, opportunities that seem small now can lead to incredible things in the future. You just have to be willing to take that first step.

So here’s my challenge to you: Be brave. Seize the day.
If you’re a personal stylist looking to grow your business, now is the time to act. Don’t let fear or doubt hold you back. I’m offering a fantastic opportunity right now to help you get more visible, attract more clients, and achieve the success you deserve.
