Being an entrepreneurial mum is a challenging at the best of times, but especially so during the summer holidays. With kids out of school, family trips, and the general chaos of summer activities, finding the time and energy to maintain your business can feel overwhelming. As a business coach to personal stylists and a mother of two school going boys, I know how difficult it is to navigate this delicate balance. Today, I want to share a story and some actionable advice to help you stay visible in your business while being present for your family.
Last week, I had a particularly interesting coaching session with Claire, one of my private clients. Claire is a coach and an expat mum who, like many others, is spending the summer overseas with her family. She’s juggling the demands of jetlag, multiple kids, and daily drives to various camps and activities. Claire's primary concern is a common one: how can she manage her business responsibilities while being there for her kids?
Claire’s story is familiar to many entrepreneurial mothers. The summer holidays can disrupt routines and make it challenging to focus on work. However, maintaining visibility in your business, even during these busy months, is crucial. Here’s how Claire and I tackled this challenge, and how you can apply the same strategies.
First and foremost, staying visible in your business doesn’t necessarily mean working long hours each day. It’s about maintaining a presence, continuing to engage with your audience, and ensuring your business remains top-of-mind for your clients and followers. Here are a few reasons why this is important:
💫Consistency Builds Trust: Regular engagement, even in small doses, helps build and maintain trust with your audience. They know you’re there, even during busy times.
💫Audience Retention: Staying visible ensures that your audience doesn’t forget about you. When the busy season ends, you’ll have a loyal following ready to engage with your more in-depth content.
💫Business Momentum: Keeping the momentum going is easier than trying to restart after a complete break. Small, consistent efforts can make a big difference.
Now, let’s dive into some practical strategies you can use to stay visible in your business during the summer holidays, even when time is limited.
➡️Plan Ahead
Content Calendar: Before the summer chaos begins, create a content calendar for the coming months. Plan out your social media posts, blog articles, and any other content you regularly share. This helps ensure you have a steady stream of content ready to go.
Batch Create Content: Spend a day or two creating a batch of content that you can schedule in advance. This could include social media posts, blog drafts, or videos. Tools like Buffer or Hootsuite can help you schedule posts ahead of time.
➡️Share Your Journey
Behind-the-Scenes Content: Share snippets of your summer activities with your audience. This doesn’t have to be overly polished or professional. Authentic behind-the-scenes content can be very engaging. I've been busy making a big international move across the world with my family but I've still managed to remain visible by sharing quick snaps and stories of my adventures.
Personal Stories: Let your audience in on your personal life. Share stories about your family trips, the challenges of balancing work and kids, and any funny or memorable moments. This humanizes your brand and helps build a deeper connection with your audience.
💡Tips For When Your Completely Out Of Ideas:
✔️Share a quick tip related to your niche. If you specialize in menopausal woman, this could be a fashion tip for hanging by the pool, a styling hack to hind a hormone tummy, or a quick video on how to accessorize to make the most of a capsule.
✔️User-Generated Content: Encourage your audience to share their own stories or photos using a specific hashtag. Feature their content on your page, which not only provides you with easy content but also fosters community engagement.
✔️Repurpose Old Content: Don’t be afraid to recycle or repurpose old content. Update an old blog post, share a throwback photo, or repost a popular video from the past. I often share memory posts on facebook.
💻Leverage Automation and Outsourcing
✔️Automation Tools: Use automation tools to handle repetitive tasks. Email marketing platforms like Mailchimp can automate your email campaigns, while social media schedulers can keep your posts consistent.
✔️Hire Help: If budget allows, consider hiring a virtual assistant or a social media manager to handle some of the workload. They can help with content creation, scheduling, and engagement.
⚖️Creating a Balance
Staying visible doesn’t mean sacrificing time with your family. It’s about finding a balance that works for you. Here are some additional tips to help you create that balance:
🙌🏻Set Boundaries: Define clear work hours and stick to them. Let your family know when you’re working and when you’re available for them.
🙌🏻Involve Your Kids: Depending on their age, involve your kids in your work. They can help with simple tasks or be part of your behind-the-scenes content.
🙌🏻Self-Care: Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Make time for relaxation and activities that recharge you. A well-rested and happy mum is more productive and creative.
Summer holidays can be a challenging time for entrepreneurial mums (and grandmothers!), but with the right strategies, you can maintain visibility in your business while being present for your family.
