It started with good intentions.
I wanted to share my knowledge. To give value. To help other women feel more confident in their clothes. So, I hosted a free styling talk.
The turnout was amazing. Women showed up, leaned in, scribbled notes, nodded along. The feedback was glowing:
“This was so helpful!”
“I finally understand my body shape.”
“You’re so generous with your time!”
But a few days later, the energy shifted.
My inbox filled with messages.
Requests for advice.
Questions about individual wardrobes.
“Just one more quick thing…”
“I can’t afford to book right now, but could you just take a look at…”
At first, I felt flattered. Then I felt obligated. Then… I felt angry.
Not at them.
At myself.

After my free styling talk, one participant emailed me asking for specific advice about her business wardrobe for an upcoming leadership promotion.
She’d already told me she couldn’t afford my services. But she still asked for personalised guidance, as if we were in a paid session.
Another woman, who had paid a small amount for a VIP upgrade, messaged me expecting two full one-on-one calls—for less than the price of dinner.
That’s when I saw the pattern.
The women I was attracting didn’t value my time… because I hadn’t made it clear that it was valuable.
And the truth is: You teach people how to treat you.
If you constantly give away high-level support for free, people will start to expect it. They’ll keep asking. And they’ll believe it’s okay, because you’ve never said otherwise.
Here’s what I’ve noticed, not just in myself, but in dozens of stylists I’ve coached:
The reason we overgive isn’t because we’re kind.
It’s because we’re afraid.
😨Afraid we won’t get clients if we don’t give a taste first.
😨Afraid of seeming greedy or money-hungry.
😨Afraid that if we don’t help, we’ll be rejected.
But overgiving actually repels high-quality clients. It drains your energy, clouds your boundaries, and creates a business model built on resentment.
It also leads to what I call “freebie-seeker energy” - a vibe that says, “I don’t value my own work, so I’m attracting people who don’t either.”
Free can be good.
Free downloads. Free talks. Free challenges. They all serve a purpose. They create trust. They build your authority. They allow potential clients to get a feel for you.
But they need to have a clear container and a clear next step.
When free has no structure, it turns into open-access.
When generosity has no boundaries, it becomes obligation.
When you give and give and give, people stop seeing your time as something to honour and instead, see it as something to access.
That’s why you need to draw a line.
Not from a place of defensiveness but from a place of self-worth.
When I received yet another email asking for business strategy advice after a free event, I paused before replying.
I took a breath and asked myself: “What would I want to say if I wasn’t worried about how I’d be perceived?”
And what came out was this:
“Thanks so much for your message. I love how engaged you are with your business growth. That kind of momentum deserves focused support. If you’re ready for deeper guidance, I’d love to invite you to book a Stylist Unstuck Strategy Call with me.”
No apologies. No guilt. No over-explaining.
Just a clear message: My time is valuable. And I can help you when you’re ready to invest in yourself.
It’s not really about the money.
It’s about integrity - your own and your clients’.
When you set a price, and someone chooses to pay it, they show up differently. They take it seriously. They implement. They grow.
When you offer everything for free, they’re less invested. They might not follow through. They might ghost. They will most likely drain you and themselves because there’s no energetic exchange.
Your pricing isn’t a punishment.
It’s a boundary.
And boundaries are a form of love - for you and your clients.
Stylists often ask me: “How do I attract clients who are happy to pay?”
Here’s the honest answer:
• Be willing to lose the ones who aren’t.
Let them walk away with the free value you gave. That’s enough.
• Be crystal clear about your next step.
“Here’s how to work with me.” Not vague. Not shy. Direct.
• Stop apologising for your pricing.
You’re not charging for oxygen. You’re charging for years of experience, insight, training, and the transformation you provide.
• Model the mindset you want your clients to have.
If you want clients who don’t haggle or guilt-trip you, stop doing it to yourself.
If you’re reading this and feeling a mix of yes, this is me and ugh, how do I fix this? - you’re not alone.
This is exactly why I created the Stylist Unstuck Strategy Session.
It’s a 45-minute one-on-one coaching call for stylists who are:
• Tired of overgiving and undercharging
• Struggling with boundaries around time and pricing
• Feeling resentful, stuck, or unsure what to do next
Here’s how it works:
1. You fill out a short application form so I can understand your biggest business challenge.
2. You book and pay the $349 investment.
3. We hop on a 45-minute Zoom call where I help you uncover the root cause of your current stuckness and create a personalised plan to move forward.
You’ll leave the call with clarity, confidence, and a clear strategy you can implement immediately.
No fluff. No overwhelm. Just grounded, practical support from someone who gets it.
You are not here to be drained.
You are not here to convince people of your value.
You are not here to be the stylist who gives everything away for free and gets nothing in return.
You are here to lead.
To model confidence.
To attract the kind of clients who respect your time, honour your boundaries, and invest in the transformation they seek.
You don’t have to apologise for being a businesswoman.
And if you’ve been stuck in this pattern for a while, it’s okay. You can change it. It starts with one choice:
Deciding that your time is worth it.
Ready to shift from frustrated to focused?
Let’s get to the root of what’s keeping you stuck and fix it, together.
